«A research-based and practice-oriented seminar on the topic: ‘Current issues in modern translation studies: the qualifications and professional skills of the translator’

 

On 1 April 2026, the Department of Oriental Philology and Translation at the Faculty of World Languages organised and held a research-based and practice-oriented seminar on the topic: ‘Current Issues in Modern Translation Studies: Translators’ Qualifications and Professional Skills’. The seminar was attended by the Head of the Department, K.H. Abrahmanova, who highlighted the significance of the methodological seminar, held as part of the Decade of Science. The aim of the event was to discuss current academic and practical issues in translation studies, to develop the professional skills of future translators, and to create a platform for the exchange of experiences between specialists, lecturers and students.

During the seminar, B.O. Salykova, PhD in Philology and Professor at SDU, gave a presentation. In her talk, she provided a detailed overview of current trends in translation studies, key aspects of developing a translator’s professional skills, and the criteria for a high-quality translation. Particular attention was paid to issues of accuracy in conveying meaning, linguistic appropriateness and cultural adaptation. Senior Lecturer N.R. Shengelbayeva from the department presented a paper on the training of future translators, the introduction of innovative teaching methods and the use of modern educational technologies. In her presentation, she emphasised the importance of a practice-oriented approach in developing students’ professional skills. During the seminar, participants actively discussed issues of intercultural communication, terminological accuracy, and modern requirements for translation quality. The speakers answered numerous questions from the audience and shared their practical experience. The seminar was organised to a high standard and was of a high academic calibre, serving as an effective platform for professional dialogue and the exchange of knowledge. Such events contribute to the development of translation studies and the training of highly qualified specialists.
